Grandma Helen’s German-Style Red Cabbage

This is Farmer Charlie's grandmother's version of this European favorite.

Ingredients

  • 2 tbsps butter
  • 1/3 cup finely chopped onion
  • 2 tbsps sugar
  • 6 cups shredded red cabbage
  • 1/2 cup red wine vinegar
  • 2 tsps salt
  • 1 cup diced, peeled and cored apple

Directions

Melt butter in a large skillet or dutch oven. Add onion and first 2 T of sugar. Cook and stir until onion is transparent, not brown. Add cabbage, vinegar and salt. Cover and simmer gently for 20 minutes. Add diced apple and second 2 T of sugar. Cook 10 more minutes or until cabbage is crisp-tender. Serves 2-4
